El Padre Javier Giraldo, destacado investigador y defensor de derechos humanos, en su libro Colombia, esta democracia genocida (1.994), describe un funesto capítulo de la guerra contra las drogas de nuestro país. Relata el padre Giraldo como en enero de 1.993, después de haber estallado un coche bomba en el centro de Bogotá causando 20 muertos, la noticia, que atribuyó los hechos al narco, recorrió el país y el mundo a través de los medios nacionales y las agencias internacionales. En ese mismo mes, se registraron 135 homicidios y 16 desapariciones forzadas por motivos políticos. Pero estos pasaron absolutamente desapercibidos por los medios de comunicación:
